According to its administrative level, highways in China are mainly divided into four levels: national highway, provincial highway, county road and township road. The numbering rules for national roads, provincial roads and county roads take the Chinese phonetic initials of national, provincial and county roads (||) as their respective identifiers (except township roads), and the numbering consists of identifiers and numbers.

What’s the difference between them?

The difference among national roads, provincial roads, county roads and township roads lies in the different starting numbers. National highway stands for G, provincial highway stands for S, county road stands for X, and township road stands for Y.

National highway-refers to the trunk highway with national political and economic significance, connecting large and medium-sized cities across the country and forming the framework of the national highway network.

The number of the national highway starts with the letter G, and G1xx stands for the radial national highway with the starting point. G2xx stands for the national highway running through the north-south direction, and G3xx stands for the national highway running across the east-west direction.

Provincial highway-refers to the highway with provincial political and economic significance, and it is also the trunk highway connecting important cities in the province, which is the responsibility of the provincial highway department.

The provincial highway number begins with the letter S, which is similar to the national highway. Xx stands for the radial provincial road starting from the provincial capital city. S2xx stands for north-south longitudinal provincial road, and xx stands for east-west provincial road.

County road-refers to the highway with political and economic significance in counties and county-level cities, connecting county towns and major towns.

The number of the county road is represented by the first three digits of the letter X.

Township road-refers to the highway connecting towns and villages.

The numbering of township roads is similar to that of county roads, and is represented by three numbers beginning with y.
