Xinhua News Agency, Brazzaville, May 25-Kinshasa News: Congo (DRC) military said on the 25th that several military bases near Goma, the capital of North Kivu province in the northeast of the country were attacked by anti-government armed groups in the early morning.
Guillaume Njikai Keke, a spokesman for the Goma region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, confirmed to Xinhua News Agency on the same day that at 4 am local time, armed members of the anti-government armed "M23 Movement" attacked several military bases of government troops near Goma. At present, the two sides are still fighting. Keke did not explain the current casualties.
Since April 2012, "M23 Movement" has launched an offensive in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, engaging in insurgent activities, resulting in a large number of civilian casualties and tens of thousands of residents being displaced. In December 2013, the Congolese government and M23 signed a peace agreement in Nairobi, Kenya. Recently, however, armed members of M23 have exchanged fire with government forces in various areas of North Kivu.
On 24th of this month, the United Nations Security Council condemned the recent attacks by armed members of M23 on government forces and peacekeepers of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
